Dr. Miller is an expert in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, stress management, borderline personality disorder, as well as suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University. Since 1995, he has headed a clinical-research team adapting DBT for outpatient suicidal multi-problem adolescents, as well as contributing to the adaptation of DBT for other populations and settings. He has received federal, state, and private funding for his research. He has authored or co-authored over 50 articles and book chapters and is first author of a best selling book titled, Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents (2007) published by Guilford Press. Relatedly, upon invitation by the American Psychological Association, Dr. Miller developed a psychotherapy training video titled, DBT for Multi-Problem Adolescents (2007). He is also co-author of a book titled Childhood Maltreatment, Advances in Psychotherapy-Evidence Based Practice, published in 2006.
Dr. Miller has received numerous awards and honors. In 2007, Dr. Miller was nominated and elected to become one of only 82 invited members of the International Academy for Suicide Research for his enduring scholarly contributions to the field of suicidology. Dr. Miller was chosen to become a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), in both Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) and Division 53 (Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology). He has served on the Board of Directors of APA, Division 12, and is past president of the Clinical Emergencies and Crises section. He also served as the 2007 Division 12 Program Chair of the APA Convention. In 2002, he received the Service Award from the International Society for the Improvement and Training of DBT (ISITDBT), served as ISITDBT Conference Chair in 2005 and 2006, and currently serves on its Executive Board.
Additionally, Dr. Miller was invited to serve on two panels of international scientists sponsored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to evaluate the relationship between pharmacotherapy and suicidal behavior among children, adolescents, and adults. He has been an invited expert at the National Institute of Mental Health consensus meetings on the assessment and treatment of adolescent suicide. He currently serves on the scientific advisory board to the New England Personality Disorder Association and is a consultant to the National Educational Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder and to several research grants and institutions internationally. Further, he is past Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member of the journal Cognitive and Behavioral Practice and serves as a reviewer for 10 other scientific journals. Finally, he is highly sought after as a guest lecturer. He has given more than 300 invited lectures and workshops to both lay and professional audiences around the world. His clinical expertise has been highlighted by various popular media outlets including: CNN Paula Zahn Show, CBS Early Morning Show, PBS, Teen People Magazine, and the NY Daily News.
